Do you have just full-time work experience, but no formal qualifications in your country or Australia? You may still apply for subclass 457/186/187(for subclass 187, you must have an Australian qualification if you are applying for the visa as a trade person, broadly speaking, skill level III unless your skills have been assessed by the skill assessment authorities). According to the ANZSCO dictionary, a person whose occupation is classified to a skill level III might be recognized if the person has at least three years full-time experience. Volunteer work cannot be considered as a full-time job because the job must be a paid one(should obey their countries' national minimum wages).

Here is very interesting case for subclass 457 and the applicant seeks an exemption in terms of a formal qualification. The applicant claimed he had enough work-experience as bricklayer in England and Australia, but the AAT member was not satisfied his claim due to the lack of concrete evidences that could explain he has equipped with skillsets. When you are preparing subclass 457 visa, you must be conscious about the documentations even though you think you have enough. Inconsistency means you got highly chance of refusal if you are heavily rely on work experience instead of a formal qualification.
