Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482)
- Overview
- Subclass 482, referred to as the TSS visa, enables employers to sponsor nominees to work in positions that reflects labour shortages. In order to get this visa, you will need employer sponsorship and in return, it is compulsory for you to work for this employer during your visa period. This is a temporary visa where you may get 2 years or 4 years’ time in Australia, depending on your occupation. There are three streams:
- the Short-Term stream
- the Medium-Term stream
- the Labour Agreement stream
- Eligibility
- 1. The Short-Term stream
- You might be able to get a visa under this stream if you:
- have worked in your nominated occupation, or a related field, for at least two years
- are a genuine applicant for entry and stay as a short term visa holder (known as a 'Genuine Temporary Entrant' (GTE))
- will be working directly for your sponsor or for an associated entity of your sponsor, unless the nominated occupation is exempt from TSS legislative instruments.
- 2. The Medium-Term stream
- You might be able to get a visa under this stream if you:
- have worked in your nominated occupation, or a related field, for at least two years
- will be working directly for your sponsor or for an associated entity of your sponsor, unless the nominated occupation is exempt from TSS legislative instruments.
- 3. The Labour Agreement stream
- You might be able to get a visa under this stream if you:
- are nominated in an occupation included in a labour agreement which your employer has entered into with the Department
- have worked in your nominated occupation, or a related field, for at least two years (unless this is not required under the labour agreement).
Who could get this visa

- Step 1: Identifiy Your Occupation
- Please go to this link & check the the occupations: the legislative instrument IMMI18/048.
- If your occupation is the on the Short Term Skilled Occupation List, you are entitled to a 2-year period visa and visa renewal options are available once you are done through the 2-year period. There’s no age limits to this visa but it does not open pathways to Permanent Residency. If you are under this category, you would be applying for the Short-term stream.
- If your occupation is on the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List, you are entitled to a 4-year period visa and there are transitional streams options for you where you could apply for permanent residence options under subclass 187 or subclass 186 visas. However, you will have to calculate your age carefully because in order to qualify for the requirement under those permanent visas, you will have to be under the age of 45 at the time of applying for those permanent visas.
- Step 2: Work Experience
- This visa requires the visa applicant:
- have at least 2 years of full-time work experience in the related occupation
- work experience needs to have been undertaken no earlier than the past 5 years’ time
- work experience undertaken during student visa times will not be counted as full-time
- will need to satisfy this 2 years work experience requirement
- Step 3: Language Ability
- Short-Term stream required:
- IELTS - overall 5.0/ at least 4.5 for each
- PTE - overall 36/ at least 30 for each
- TOEFL - overall 35/ listening & reading at least 3, Speaking & writing at least 12
- OET - at least B for each
- CAE - overall 154/ at least 147 for each
- Medium-Term stream required:
- IELTS - at least 5.0 for each
- PTE - at least 36 for each
- TOEFL - overall 35/ listening & reading at least 4, Speaking & writing at least 14
- OET - at least B for each
- CAE - at least 154 for each
- Step 4: Qualification/ Skill Assessment
- Relevant Qualifications may be required to prove the nominee’s expertise in the field of work
- Skill Assessment may be required when recognized qualifications are not availablen
- There are also mandatory skill assessment requirements for certain occupations if you are from selected countries.

- Step 5: Find a Sponsor
- It is not just about finding a sponsor, it is also about finding a sponsor who has the ability to sponsor you. - Application stages
- There are 3 processing stages in sponsoring an employee from overseas under the subclass 482 visa programme:
- 1. Sponsorship
- To become a sponsor, a prospect sponsor must be able to show that the business:
- is a lawfully operating business
- meets training requirements (Australian businesses only)
- agrees to the number of subclass 482 workers to be nominated
- have no relevant adverse information against your business.
- Australian businesses must also demonstrate their commitment to employing local labour as well as non-discriminatory recruitment practices.
- 2. Nomination
Nomination is the process of identifying a position to be filled by a skilled worker from outside Australia in an approved business
- The nomination process identifies:
- The existence of the employment agreement between the sponsor and the applicant
- Conditions of the work agreement
- Workplace terms
- Proof for the sponsor of having difficulty in recruiting local Australian work force
- Genuine position establishments
- 3. Visa Application
- The person nominated to work in the nominated occupation applies for the subclass 482 visa. This is the final step to obtaining a subclass 482 visa
