Australian Citizenship

Overview
This is for people who have obtained Australian permanent visas and wish to convert their immigration status to being an Australian Citizen. Once you have become an Australian Citizen, you will be entitled to hold an Australian Passport and no longer have to renew the travel rights on permanent visas. Please note that if you are the citizen of certain countries and wish to apply for Australian Citizenship, you may have to give up your current Citizenship.
Who could get this visa?
  • Might be able to get the citizenship if:
    • Currently holding a permanent visa
    • Lived in Australia for the last four years with a valid visa and including the last 12 months as a permanent resident
    • Out of 12 months' time, have not spent more than 90 days outside Australia
    • During the four year period, have not spent more than 1 year in total outside Australia

  • Upcoming changes in July 2018 to the Australian Citizenship eligibility:
    • A minimum of four years spent in Australia whilst holding permanent residence, with no more than one year spent outside Australia during that period
    • New English Language requirements
    • Requirement to demonstrate integration and contribution to the Australian society
    • New test questions coming up
    • Strengthened value statements
    • Strengthened pledge

  • If you are looking to get Australian Citizenship, it's better for you to get it fast because if you apply after the changes that takes place in July 2018, you may find your eligibility in question.
